Moana, a 2017 Disney animated film written and produced by Ron Clements and John Musker, is the 50th animated feature in the studio's history. The story is about Moana Waialiki, a girl who sails away from her island as a child and as an adult (her mother died when she was born) to save her people. The film features native Polynesian culture. The movie received widespread acclaim from critics and audiences alike with many praising its story telling as well as depicting Polynesian culture beautifully. It was nominated for Best Animated Feature Film at the 89th Academy Awards and won Best Animated Feature Film at the BAFTAs for this year. The Blu-ray and DVD was released on March 7, 2017. The digital HD release happened on February 21, 2017. There is a sequel planned for this movie and is expected to be released sometime in 2019. Moana Waialiki has grown up with the greatest explorer of Motunui island – her father – who teaches her about sailing and who instills courage in her. However, one day, Moana's father goes out to sea to explore as usual but never returns as he gets eaten by a giant monster named Te Kā at sea thus leaving Moana as the only heir of Motunui island. Her grandmother Hina, the chieftain of the island, tells Moana that she must never go out to sea as it is forbidden. One day, Moana's heart calls her to the sea and despite her grandmother's warning she goes onto boat with no sail or oars. Despite being left without any guidance the ocean magically gives her a glowing fish named Pōwehi who will lead her way to an island. However, behind them Motunui is attacked by Te Kā and Moana turns around to help but Pōwehi gets eaten by Te Kā forcing Moana to flee on foot. Moana manages to escape from Te Kā but her boat is destroyed and she goes up to a grassy plain that is surrounded by giant monsters. Pushed to the edge by these threats, Moana wishes for a way back home and a dying demigod named Maui, who was once a hero of the island, appears before her and tells her that he will help if she can restore his magical stone armour. Moana begins building a boat with the help of coconut pirates. While leaving her island behind, Moana encounters Heihei the rooster who joins Moana on her journey because he wants to find someone to eat him as he thinks that he is delicious. The next day, Moana and her companions encounter Tamatoa, a giant, self-absorbed yeti crab who is covered in shiny objects. After stealing Heihei and Pōwehi the next day Tamatoa tells Moana about how he became so large, before she leaves. After sailing far away Moana meets the god of the island Te Fiti. Te Fiti tells Moana that Maui is actually her enemy as he stole Te Kā's heart which turned him into a hero but also into a selfish jerk. The heart's power has taken away all of his empathy and has made him greedy to the point where he only thinks about himself.
